Valorization of wastes from textile and construction industry as secondary raw materials for the development of sustainable functional materials (WASTE2BUILD)

ABSTRACT

The WASTE2BUILD project focuses on the development of advanced and circular economy solutions through the integration of waste from the textile and construction industries. Led by the TECTEX research group, the project aims to optimize mechanical recycling processes to obtain high-quality fibers and to develop low-impact LC3-type cements derived from mineral waste.

The general objective of WASTE2BUILD is to transform industrial waste streams into advanced materials with thermoregulation and structural monitoring properties. In this way, WASTE2BUILD acts as a strategic technological bridge, converting by-products into high-value materials to support the transition towards decarbonized and zero-waste construction.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

To optimise the fiber mechanical recycling process

To maximize the dosage of calcium carbonate-rich construction waste in LC3 cement formulations

To develop sustainable and conductive textile structures with a high content of recycled fibers

To develop functional LC3 cement pastes containing construction waste and phase change and/or conductive material

To design functionalized textile-based products and cement-based composites for sustainable building solutions

To assess the environmental impact of the process and materials developed
